While directing Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Leonard Nimoy instructed Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to create a starship that would appear significantly more advanced than the USS Enterprise. Concept artist Nilo Rodis developed several Excelsior designs, many of which featured elongated hulls and four nacelles.

Model maker Bill George then constructed study models based on these concepts and introduced an additional design of his own, which ultimately became the final USS Excelsior seen on screen.

These original study models were later repurposed as wreckage in the Starfleet graveyard sequence featured in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II."
